The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident when the vehicle’s body mass is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
In some cases, mass transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to a force up to three times greater than the other. This results in major deformation and twisting of the chassis or bodywork, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Deformation and twisting of the chassis during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
