The car’s chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads as a result of the driver’s driving style. This is particularly evident when the body’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, hard braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer during cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This causes significant chassis flex, or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, resulting in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and flex during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
