A vehicle’s chassis is subjected to the greatest loads during driving. These are caused primarily by the transfer of the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking and acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This can lead to significant twisting and bending of the chassis or bodywork, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis twisting and deformation while cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
