The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. This is mainly due to the transfer of the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or sudden acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more load than the other. This causes significant chassis flex, or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, resulting in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
