The vehicle chassis is the part that is subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, hard braking and acceleration.
When cornering, the transfer of mass can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This can result in significant torsional loads on the chassis, deformation and body flex, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and body flex when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
