The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. This is mainly caused by the transfer of body mass during rapid changes of direction, heavy braking and acceleration.
When cornering, mass transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times more force than the other. This causes significant chassis flexing or deformation and torsion of the body, which can result in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
