The car’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads while driving. It is particularly exposed due to the transfer of the body’s mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. This causes pronounced chassis flex, or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, resulting in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and flex while driving through bends can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
