A car’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest stresses while driving. This is particularly pronounced due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or intense acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to forces up to three times greater than the other. This leads to significant twisting and deformation of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting while driving through corners can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
