The car’s chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident when the body’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
In certain situations, weight transfer during cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to 3 times more heavily than the other. This can result in significant chassis flex, or body deformation and torsion, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flex during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
