The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. This is particularly noticeable due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
In certain cases, weight transfer in a corner can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to three times more than the other. This results in significant chassis flex and twisting, or deformation of the body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable driving characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
