The vehicle chassis is the part that is subjected to the greatest loads while driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of body weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. This causes significant chassis flex, or deformation and torsion of the bodywork, resulting in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and flex during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
