The vehicle chassis is the part that is subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is especially pronounced due to the transfer of body mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, the transfer of mass when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. This causes significant chassis flexing or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, resulting in the tyres losing grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
