The car’s chassis is the component subjected to the greatest stresses as a result of driving conditions. This is particularly noticeable when the weight of the body shell is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer while cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times more force than the other. This causes significant bending, deformation and twisting of the body shell, resulting in a loss of tyre grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting while cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
