The car’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. This is particularly evident when the body mass is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times more force than the other. This can lead to significant bending and twisting of the chassis or bodywork, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Bending and twisting of the chassis during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
