A car’s chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads as a result of the driver’s input. This is particularly evident when the body’s weight is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or hard acceleration.
In some cases, weight transfer while cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. This results in significant deformation and twisting of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting when cornering can cause undesirable driving characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
