The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly pronounced due to weight transfer through the bodywork during fast cornering, heavy braking or sharp acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to up to three times more force than the other. The result is significant chassis flex, or deformation and torsion of the bodywork, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flex during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
