A car’s chassis is the part most exposed to forces caused by the driver’s inputs. This is particularly evident when the body mass is transferred during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
In some cases, mass transfer when cornering can cause one side of the vehicle to experience up to three times more load than the other. This causes considerable chassis flex and deformation, as well as torsional loads on the bodywork, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and flexing when cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
