The vehicle chassis is the part subjected to the greatest loads while driving. This is mainly caused by the transfer of the body’s mass during fast cornering, heavy braking or sudden acceleration.
When mass is transferred through a corner, one side of the vehicle can be subjected to a force up to three times greater than the other. This causes significant twisting and deformation of the chassis or bodywork, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting while cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
