The vehicle chassis is one of the most heavily loaded parts, as it is affected by the transfer of the body’s mass during fast cornering, heavy braking and sudden acceleration.
When cornering, the transfer of mass to one side of the vehicle can result in up to three times more force being transferred than to the other side. This causes considerable loads, bending and twisting of the chassis or bodywork, which can cause the tyres to lose grip.
Bending and twisting of the chassis during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
