A car’s chassis is among the parts subjected to the greatest loads during driving. This is particularly evident due to the transfer of the body’s weight during fast cornering, heavy braking or acceleration.
When cornering, weight transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be subjected to as much as three times more force than the other. This results in significant bending and twisting of the chassis or body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Bending and twisting of the chassis while cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics, such as understeer and oversteer.
