The chassis is the part of the vehicle subjected to the greatest loads during dynamic driving. These loads are mainly caused by the transfer of the body’s mass during fast cornering, heavy braking and acceleration.
When cornering, mass transfer can cause one side of the vehicle to be loaded up to 3 times more than the other. This can cause considerable chassis flex, or deformation and torsional twisting of the body, causing the tyres to lose grip.
Chassis deformation and twisting during cornering can cause undesirable handling characteristics such as understeer and oversteer.
